Miriam Jones (Pilates)

Miriam is a STOTT PILATES Instructor Trainer as well as holding a Certificate IV in Pilates through Network Pilates. She has also trained at Pilates Institute in U.K. and Australia, and is a qualified fitness trainer. Miriam has been teaching Pilates full time since 2001. Miriam has spent thousands of hours working closely with physiotherapists and dancers, and has presented Pilates workshops and education nationally.

Whilst her fast-paced group classes are amongst the most highly sought after at Breathe, Miriam specialises in one on one sessions; she particularly loves facilitating the process of rehabilitation and movement pattern retraining which is part of the return to a fully functioning body. Miriam's look leans towards Uma Thurmanesque tracksuits, and her movie star quality has been compared to "a better looking Rachel Griffiths". Her spirit totem animal is the Penguin. During the past 15 years Ambika has run her own Yoga studio, explored over 20 countries and has taught and performed in Music and Fringe festivals, Hotels, Clubs and Amusement parks throughout  Europe, Asia and Australia. Rachel holds STOTT PILATES full certifcation and has been teaching Pilates full time since 2003, working extensively alongside physiotherapists in a clinical rehabilitative setting, Rachel's interest and talent is in working with injuries and special needs. Rachel is originally from Scotland, although she trained first in New Zealand, then completed her STOTT PILATES qualifications at Breathe. Her 1:1 and small group Pilates teaching is characterised by attention to detail, variety and customisation of each workout. When you attend Rachel's group Reformer classes, though, you'll understand what we mean by "sweet, yet super-severe" and "caring, but exacting"...

Rachel loves living by the beach with her ex-fiancee Ben (they're married now), cooking, exercise and enjoying breakfast with family and friends. Her Look draws inspiration from the Noir aesthetic of Louise Brooks, and she somehow manages an elegant blend of softness with style so piercing, you could cut yourself on it. Nicole Mazurkiewicz (Pilates)

Nicole is a STOTT PILATES Instructor Trainer and is currently undertaking a degree in Health Science (majoring in Anatomy) at Latrobe University. She returned to Australia from Dubai especially to teach at Breathe, for which we're very grateful, as she's one of Australia's top young instructors, not to mention her uncanny ability to colour-coordinate.

In Nicole's classes you'll enjoy her lightness and intensity, her humour and her ability to make working hard so much fun (did we mention that you'll enjoy working hard?).

Dubai is where Nicole learnt her deep appreciation for all things arabic: music, calligraphy, food & dance... you'll find her laughing with the gang at reception between classes

Nicole's Look draws inspiration from some of the Greats in the history of Dance Movies, and could be described as "American Ballet School Chic". Her collection of Leg Warmers is truly impressive. Nicole's spirit totem animal is the exotic Snow Leopard. You can email Nicole.

Heath Lander (Pilates)

Heath completed his full STOTT PILATES certification at Breathe. With a history rooted in Iyengar yoga and martial arts, Heath's teaching manner combines the hard-edged grizzle of a boxing trainer with the ethereal detachment of a yogi. His enthusiasm for the innate wisdom of Pilates is unmistakable.

Heath's group classes typically ensure a thorough whole-body workout with an exacting attention to detail. However, he is also responsible for such notorious and muscle-specific workouts as 'Gluter-nator 3: The rise of the Reformers', 'The Night of the Long Sidebends' and 'The Search for the Abdominal Snowman'.

In a one-on-one setting Heath's strength is in helping people to recognize specific dysfunctions in the way they use their bodies, isolating and correcting them, and then integrating that correction into whole body, sustained workouts.

In the rare moments when Heath is not teaching Pilates, he can be found playing uke with his kid, making pictures by himself (peruse his creations at heathlander.com), teaching art to autistic kids or deciding what colour T-shirt will go well today with his unflinchingly black track pants…His Spirit Totem Animal is the sleek, cuddly, killer Mongoose. Olivia Bryant (Yoga)

Olivia is an Anusara-Inspired Yoga teacher. Anusara blends life-affirming philosophy with sound alignment principles to connect the body, heart and mind on the yoga mat to help inspire life off the mat! Olivia makes it her mission to help students express themselves in a joyful manner (even if the hamstrings protest), release unhelpful conditioning and think more deeply about the nature of existence.

To aid her mission,  she may read a poem or two or quote a wise person.  Her classes are dynamic, creative, sometimes funny and sometimes serious but always full of passion. She wishes to acknowledge and thank her teachers including John Friend for their wisdom and guidance.

Olivia also has training in yoga therapeutics, a natural extention of Anusara Yoga which works with principles of alignment that move the body towards an optimal blueprint. Using these principles of alignment she works with students in private sessions who may be injured or suffering from pain. A therapeutic session works slowly and precisely to align the body towards it's optimal blueprint so clients learn how to heal their body through their practice.

When she's not teaching Yoga classes at Breathe, you'll probably find Olivia enjoying pizza on her loungeroom floor, or dancing wildly in her sneakers to soul music. Olivia's spirit totem animal is the sleek, mercurial mongoose. You can email Olivia.

Andrew Gardner (Pilates)

Andrew holds STOTT PILATES full certification. He is the owner of Revolution Fitness a specialist gym in Melboune's Preston. Andrew Spent 8 years dancing in Germany and Denmark performing in Musicals such as Cats, Starlight Express, Beauty and the Beast plus a few more. On his return to Australia he did several performances with "Opera Australia" and has also presented a Stott Pilates segment on Foxtel's "Ovation" channel.

Andrew draws on his many years of Dance and Gymnastics training. His emphasis on precision (and love of pulses) may cause you to be surprised at how UNBELIEVABLY TOUGH his classes are. After you experience Andrew's Reformer class, you'll definitely know you have worked. And worked. Get ready to rumble!

You can also find Andrew teaching small group and one-on-one sessions where he likes to focus on the individual needs of his clients. He particularly loves working with general fitness clients who love to work hard and push their bodies beyond what they thought they were capable of. Up for a challenge? Andrew also has experience working with a wide range of injuries helping clients restore strength and more functional movement patterns to the body.

Andrew's spirit totem animal is the Cougar, and he favours coordinated scarves and unusually coloured custom sport shoes.

Michelle Scott (Pilates)

Michelle is one of Australia's most experienced Pilates instructors and one of only 3 fully certified STOTT PILATES Instructor Trainers in Australia. She has accumulated over 10 thousand hours certifying Pilates instructors in Australia, as well as pretty much every other country in the world where they've heard of Pilates including New Zealand, North America, Europe, UK, Southeast Asia and Dubai. (Sorry she hasn't taught in Africa ...yet).

Michelle's passion is for empowering students and clients to find their own strengths. Despite her sylphlike demeanor and musical speech, Michelle's group sessions are deceptively intense, because of the precision and flow of her teaching, you won't get away with anything.

Her lightness, encyclopeadic knowledge of Pilates and infinite attention to detail carry over into her individual Pilates teaching.

At first glance Michelle's look is Clean Pilates/Lulu, but look more closely and you'll detect distinct undertones of 'Early 90's Inner-Sydney Rock Scene' which lend her ensembles a pleasing edginess. Michelle embodies the Thinking Person's Spirit Totem - the Orangutan. You can email Michelle.

Sharon Hibbin (Pilates)

Sharon completed her STOTT PILATES full certification training at Breathe and began teaching classes soon after. Hailing from the UK, Sharon is known as a straight-talker, so won't let you get away with any slacking off in her classes. Thankfully she combines this with a hilarious biting wit so keeps you amused while pushing you through yet another set of lunges.

Back in the UK, she did a long stint as a published academic, before working as an Investigator. Whilst she does miss the gasps of excitement regarding this at dinner parties, she is loving the world of Pilates even more. Sharon moved to Australia with her Aussie boyfriend in search of sun surf and sand, but couldn't resist all the fashion, food and friends that Melbourne has to offer, so she decided to compromise on the sun and surf. Having said that, she does try hard to get outdoors frequently, and is definitely the most tanned member of the Breathe team.

Sharon tries her best to be colour coordinated at all times but admits that sometimes the nail varnish matching can slip. Even when she is slightly mussed though, her natural warmth, charm and bounciness easily carry her through, just like her Spirit Totem animal, the Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby.

When not hanging out at Breathe, Sharon likes to travel, ride horses, cook and drink red wine.

Sharon also spends time at reception so you can share a tea with her next time you're in. You can email Sharon

Bianca Milione (Yoga)

Bianca began her practice of yoga in 1998. She has completed her teacher training with Peter Scott (Senior Intermediate Iyengar yoga teacher) and continues her study with him on a regular basis. Bianca holds an Introductory Level 2 certificate in Iyengar yoga. She has also previously trained in Hatha yoga with Acharya Venkatesh, and in the Knoff style of yoga with Nicky Knoff.

In Bianca's classes you can expect to find emphasis on connecting to stillness in the midst of a dynamic physical practice. Iyengar yoga differs from other styles in it's sequencing, timing and intricacies. Level 1 Iyengar yoga classes progress clearly step by step to provide a foundation in standing and seated poses that build strength and flexibility, while calming the mind. Level 2 Iyengar yoga includes the practice of a broader range of more challenging asanas including inversions and backbends, while developing steadiness of mind and the ability to look inside. Sequences vary from week to week.

Bianca is a lover of nature, fresh air, healthy food and of growing some of it herself! She is a naturopath and a low-fat raw vegan in the 80/10/10 style. Her roots are in Italy, she is an Italian speaker and comes from a long line of organic farmers. Bianca' spirit totem animal is the Bilby. You can email Bianca

Stephanie Glickman (Pilates)

Stephanie is a STOTT PILATES Instructor Trainer and is also certified through Polestar and APMA - that's a lot of certification! Not to mention her Masters degree in dance studies, as well as a graduate degree in English. Stephanie is also a qualified fitness trainer (we suspect she likes to study). Originally from Los Angeles, Stephanie came to Australia for a 1 year backpacking holiday and never went back. She owns and operates her own studio, Armature Pilates in Melbourne's East Brunswick (that's the cool end of Brunswick), where she hangs out with her son Felix, and hubby Michael.

Stephanie writes dance columns for the Herald Sun and Australian Stage Online, and her book "Australia Takes the Stage" was published by Hardie Grant in 2008.

In Stephanie's class you'll be titillated by a quickfire series of hilarious witticisms, whilst you enjoy a lively-paced class full of a variety of different exercises, so there's plenty to keep your interest in motivation levels high. Stephanie has the knack of keeping you simultaneously comfortable, amused and perspiring. Get ready for Hip Rolls.

Leonie Lockwood (Yoga)

Leonie’s interest in and enjoyment of yoga developed in childhood. Inspired by her mum, Leonie remembers shoulder-stands and setu bandasana in front of the telly whilst watching Swami Saraswati, in the 70s. Her practice has advanced from here culminating in a long love affair with yoga with the occasional dalliance in pilates.

Leonie has studied a range of yoga styles in Australia including Hatha, Iyengar, Ashtanga and Anusara Inspired classes. Further study in India included time spent at the Sivananda ashram in Kerala and undertaking classical Hatha teacher training with Bharath Shetty from Yoga India Mysore.

Leonie’s aim is to build strength, lightness and stamina spiritually, physically and mentally as essential tools for daily life.

Prior to being embraced by the yoga and massage bug, Leonie spent many years working in the non government sector assisting those experiencing homelessness and housing distress and holds a Graduate Diploma in Adolescent Health and Welfare. Leonie also has qualifications in remedial massage, Thai yoga massage and teaching English as a second language.

In her spare time Leonie loves hiking tall mountains, eating chocolate and cruising around town on her bike. Her spirit totem animal is of course the uniquely elegant and unbridled Appaloosa.

Natalie Ball (Yoga)

Natalie gives endless thanks to her mother for introducing her to yoga in 2002. She was instantly hooked and knew the type of lifestyle it presented was one to hold onto and cherish. She noticed the tremendous difference it made in her competitive sports (both mentally and physically) and the calmness it brought her emotionally.

Natalie is strongly committed to a regular practice and received her YogaWorks teaching certification in 2008. That same year, she completed her degree in Human Kinetics from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada.

She loves yoga for many reasons: the open-mindedness it encourages, the enhanced connection it brings to oneself and others, the freedom it permits while linking breath and movement, but most of all - its capacity to create space for change as well as accept oneself wherever you’re at.

Come find a balance of effort and ease and enjoy a dynamic class that weaves poses together in a safe, playful way.

Natalie's spririt totem animal channels her incredibly cute side, the baby Harp seal.

Julie is trained as a Naturopath and Remedial Masseuse. She has been involved in the management of fitness, martial arts and Pilates centres since 2002, since giving up her private Naturopathy practice. Julie enjoys a regular Pilates practice including weekly private sessions to help keep her strong and supple for the physically demanding role of mothering a young up-and-coming Pilates-ite.

Julie's Look draws on inspiration from the classic era of style, the 1930's; but with a modern twist. Her fashion heros are Gwen Stefani, Constance Bennett and Ginger Rogers, and she is currently studying garment construction and patternmaking at the Melbourne School of Fashion. Cera Lai (Reception)

Cera completed her STOTT PILATES training at Breathe, and currently teaches at Mel's Pilates and Yoga Shed, in between working reception at Breathe and publishing research on age related differences in plasma proteins in adults and children.

According to Ambika, Cera is the coolest person in the world, because she is into photographing bands, colllecting tattoos, alphabetically catalogueing her extensive comic collection, and doesn't like Chinese food, even though she's Chinese.

Cera is currently studying photography, is a master at anything digital (ask her about prime numbers sometime!). She likes to climb; rocks not the corporate ladder.

Cera's Look is classic "Post skate-punk", spiced with a subtle dash of "Indie Rock Goddess". Cera's Spirit Totem Animal is Sylvester the Cat.

Siggy Verelst (Reception)

We love Siggy. Why? Because you can make her laugh by... being alive. AND because she studied fashion design, in Antwerp. And Directing, in Brussels. And then did a Masters in Fiction, in Brussels (That's in Belgium).

Siggy took a sabbatical year and headed for Australia. True wisdom must come from learning how to muster in the desert so for a few weeks she was catching goats on a "caddle" station in WA, that was almost the size of Belgium. She is still an expert in handling goats these days, which she says has helped her a great deal in her relationship with James. So if you have any problems with your goats, bring them in.

Siggy has worked as a filmmaker and director, and has given film workshops for people with mental disabilities under her own organisation De Filmerie.

Oh by the way Siggy is currently studying her Masters in Psychotherapy, in Melbourne.

Siggy was introduced to Ashtanga yoga in Mysore, India in 2001, and has practiced regularly ever since, though she has recently enjoyed Olivia's Anusara-Inspired classes. She is only nationalistic about French Fries, which are not French but Belgian. She eats them about 4 times a week to keep the doctor away. She likes Knight's tales and elegant courageous Celtic maidens. John William Waterhouse is her favourite painter because he only draws brave knights and noble, elegant maidens. Scotland and castles are also part of the fetish.

This is reflected in her Look, where romance and elegance are on the surface but the 4 pairs of cowboy boots in her closet represent the veiled presence of the goat-girl.

You can email Siggy

James Kelly (Studio Manager)

James likes; being a dad, W. Somerset Maugham, traditional shaving paraphernalia, Montenegro with a dash of mandarin, American Bluegrass, Frederic Chopin, goat-girls, Burritos, and night swimming. James has taught Southern Praying Mantis Kung Fu and practices both Pilates and Yoga, as well as being an expert on Trigger Point release. He's the only human alive who fully understands how the Breathe database works.

James is also a Fashionista of Renown, and is highly skilled at helping people discover their own true Look. His Look has, by some, been called "Hemmingway chic"; you'll often meet him on his way to a debutante ball, still wiping the Bear fur and snow from his over-jacket.
