Breathe Lotus How we started Breathing together

One of the unique and refreshing things about Breathe is that all of our owners and staff are passionate about Yoga and Pilates. We love Yoga and Pilates so much that we want to share them with you, because we know you'll love Yoga and Pilates too.

Breathe Wellbeing began as a dream of Kate Challis’s in 1995 when, as a PhD student, she just wanted a beautiful, calm space in which to practice her Yoga. Lugging her laptop around Europe, America and Australia, she practiced in Yoga studios all around the world, but disliked the patchouli oil hanging in the air, the pouchy leggings of extreme yogis and the grubby floorboards on which she often laid her mat. Most of all she noticed how many teachers simply ignored new students until they had proven themselves worthy. In one case, it took 18 months of regular classes, before the guru-teacher acknowledged her presence, let alone gave her feedback.

In 2004 Raphael Bender entered the scene and he and Kate started comparing notes. A kung fu black belt and Pilates teacher, Raphael had similar views. “Let’s create a beautiful, sparkling place where people feel connected and welcomed, and can benefit from state of the art equipment and teaching techniques”.

So, in 2006, Kate and Raphael assembled a team of people, passionate and fascinated about wellbeing: they are our directors and staff and you’ll find more about them all here.

Breathe Lounge

Breathe Lotus What you'll find at Breathe

We have created a beautiful, magical space where you can escape from the everyday, and where you can feel comfortable just to be you. Here are some of the things you'll find at Breathe:

  • Breathe is Melbourne CBD’s largest dedicated Yoga and Pilates studio, with over 50 Yoga and Pilates classes at all times of the day, every week.
  • We'll welcome you warmly (even if you suck at Pilates and Yoga!)
  • Our lounge is a comfortable, light, place to sit and relax. Whether or not you’re doing a class. Bring a friend or colleague, or get some time to yourself. Pick up one of our inspirational magazines or books. We don’t do newspapers, though: too much bad news out there already.
  • Our first floor Yoga and Pilates studios are for energy, balance, flexibility, strength and relaxation. Do a Yoga or Pilates class. Or two.
  • Our Yoga and Pilates instructors are friendly, qualified and approachable. They will make contact with you each and every class.
  • Every Yoga class, and every Pilates class is a unique experience; you will leave feeling quite different to how you felt when you arrived!
  • We make sure our windows are sparkling to let in lots of natural light, our flowers are fresh and our changing rooms gleaming.
  • We provide you with organic bathroom products so you look good and feel clean.
  • We fill our space with good smells.
  • Free green tea (and water of course!:-) drink lots!
  • Free organic fruit. After your Yoga or Pilates class, take a couple back to the office for later – or to share with a friend.

Pilates Reformer Box Breathe Melbourne CBD

"I used to be a philanthropist donating to gyms but not actually attending any of them, honestly two years ago I paid $1200.00 for a gym membership that I never used for a single day. I was so ashamed of how much I let myself go I couldn’t bring myself to get out of the house some days let alone get into gym clothes. I was unmotivated, unfit and just plain unhappy.

Breathe’s beautiful atmosphere and wonderful staff create a healing experience with positiveness, kindness and guidance. Through their warmth and encouragement I’m not only attending the addictive reformer Pilates classes but I’m also living a much healthier and happier life. I whole heartedly recommend Raph and the team at Breathe to anyone and everyone.

I feel truly blessed to have found Breathe."

Risharda Robertson, Team Leader Audits – 26 years old

Breathe Lotus What you won't find at Breathe

We are a haven and sanctuary for busy people who want to take a little bit of time for themselves, away from the bright lights, noise and bustle of Melbourne city. Thus we have chosen to omit certain things...

Sorry, at Breathe Yoga and Pilates you won’t find:

  • TV
  • Loud Music
  • Competitiveness
  • Mirrors
  • Weights
  • Running machines
  • Noise
  • Show-Off Instructors (ok maybe sometimes)
  • Conveyor Belts
  • Sweaty Carpet
  • Patchouli Oil (that's a Yoga joke)
  • An "in-crowd"

If you want to understand the Patchouli Oil joke, or if you have any other questions, please feel free to call us, or you could email reception@breathewellbeing.com.au.
